Message from Chancellor Cantor: Emergency Support
April 16, 2020
Dear Rutgers University – Newark students,
I hope from the bottom of my heart that you are safe and well.
The past month has tested us all, and yet I know that the global pandemic is having disparate impacts, for some quickly taking health or financial circumstances that can be fragile in normal times and turning them into emergencies. As you may know, at Rutgers-Newark we have resources to help students in need during normal times, but I also want you to know that many members of the Rutgers-Newark family have been working day and night in recent weeks to identify and secure additional resources to help address the unforeseen emergency circumstances in which more students are finding themselves now.
If you are facing emergency needs, I urge you—whether you are an undergraduate, or graduate or professional program student—to let us know now by reaching out to the RU-N CARE Team or the Office of Financial Aid to learn more about, and apply for support from, the Rutgers-Newark Student Emergency Fund. This fund was established through the coordinated efforts of the Office of the Chancellor, deans of the schools and colleges across Rutgers-Newark, and student leaders, with the generous support of alumni and friends of the university, our own Student Governing Association, our own faculty and staff, and your fellow students.
In the coming days, we also anticipate receiving federal support in the amount of $5.8 million to increase further our capacities to help students facing emergencies, as a result of the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and. Economic Security) Act. We are putting in place a comprehensive process to apply for all sources of emergency funding. Early next week you will receive an email explaining the process and providing a link to apply.
Meanwhile, I reiterate: please reach out now to the CARE Team or Office of Financial Aid if you are facing an emergency. In the interest of your self-care, please also be mindful that we have other forms of support available to you.

With care and in solidarity,
