Dear Rutgers University – Newark Community Members,

In the wake last week’s horrifying murder of historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church members as they gathered in prayer together, we join the people of Charleston, South Carolina in mourning. In solidarity with their community, we have lowered the flag of ours, recalling the words of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King in his letter from Birmingham jail, “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.”

At the same time, we join the people of Charleston and communities nationwide in strengthening our resolve to work against racism and hate in all its forms. We resolve to remain dissatisfied with diversity in numbers and rededicate ourselves to the hard work of striving for genuine, mutual understanding by not only living side by side, but listening to each other attentively, sharing our stories, and joining in common cause to make our community and our nation better.

Cordially,

Nancy Cantor
