Introducing the Next Chancellor of Rutgers University–Newark... Dr. Tonya Smith-Jackson!

Rutgers-Newark Interim Chancellor Jeffrey Robinson announced new leadership changes that will begin on July 1. 

Taja-Nia Henderson will be stepping down as Dean of the Graduate School Newark and Director of P3 Collaboratory and returning to the Rutgers Law School faculty.

“For more than six years, Dr. Henderson has been an unyielding advocate for the Rutgers-Newark graduate programs and their students. Please join me in thanking Dr. Henderson for her commitment and leadership while sending her our best wishes as she returns to the faculty,’’ said Robinson.
 
Gregg Van Ryzin, a professor within the School of Public Affairs & Administration, has accepted the Interim Dean position for the Graduate School Newark beginning. Van Ryzin will bring his expertise as an experienced educational administrator and scholar to the position.  

“During his tenure within the School of Public Affairs & Administration, Dr. Van Ryzin served as the Interim Dean and Ph.D. program chair on multiple occasions. We look forward to working closely with Dr. Van Ryzin and the team within the Graduate School Newark,’’ Robinson said.
 
Ashaki Rouff will assume the position of Director for P3 Collaborator. She is a professor of Earth & Environmental Sciences in the School of Arts & Sciences--Newark. Rouff has been involved with the P3 since its inception.  

“Dr. Rouff was the first faculty fellow and currently serves as the Associate Director.  Her knowledge and experience with P3 along with her scholarship will be invaluable as she takes on this leadership position,’’ Robinson said. 

Salamishah Tillet, director of Express Newark and a professor of African American Studies and Creative Writing,will begin her two-year Emerson Collective Fellowship. In this role, she will curate an exhibition and related events featuring works by artists born, based in, or visiting Newark from 1975 through the present, to explore how art can confront and counter a city’s challenges.
 
Arts, Culture & Media professors Nick Kline and Stefon Harris have agreed to serve as co-directors of Express Newark.  

“Salamishah has been a leader with vision and has moved Express Newark forward on many fronts. We are so very grateful to her for her tireless effort, commitment, and dedication to Express Newark’s success,’’ said Robinson.
 
“Please join us in welcoming Nick and Stefon in their new leadership roles and thanking them for their willingness to help guide Express Newark forward. Under their guidance, Express Newark’s arts programming will continue to thrive, bridging students and educational offerings with the greater Newark community,’’ he added.
