Devon Christopher Corry is a first-year Honors Living-Learning Community Scholar at Rutgers University–Newark who intends to major in journalism and media studies. He enters his freshman year self-assured and ready to conquer the world.

“I’m proud to be at Rutgers-Newark,” stated Corry, accepted to 22 schools including five Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). “I appreciate the opportunities that HBCUs provide for minorities and persons of color. At the same time, I applaud Rutgers-Newark for its social acceptance and platform for success available to people from all backgrounds and cultures. Moreover, the location is ideal as I am a Newark resident. Consequently, the proximity to home allows sufficient space and separation between my family life, school life, and personal relationships.”

An alumnus of University High School (UHS) of the Humanities in Newark and salutatorian of his graduating class, Corry is a natural leader. He brings to Rutgers-Newark his intellectual curiosity and leadership experience as president of UHS’s National Honors Society, Student Government Association, and P.I.T (Poetry Intensive Therapy) Club; lead chair of the Phoenix Flame, UHS’s journalism club; bass sectional leader of the UHS Advanced Choir; and a Class of 2020 UHS student ambassador.

“With the knowledge I gain in the classroom at Rutgers-Newark, I hope to intern at several studios and radio and TV stations,” Corry shared. “I would love to serve as a host on WRNU,” which is Rutgers-Newark’s on-campus radio station. Ultimately, Corry aspires to star in his own show. While a member of the Phoenix Flame, he had the opportunity to interview singer Faith Evans, a fellow graduate of University High School, which further fueled his desire to pursue a career in media.

Other items on Corry’s college bucket list include appointments as a resident adviser or community service officer/security guard. “These are jobs that align with my personality,” said Corry, known for his outspokenness, authenticity, empathy, and fun and accepting nature. “I also will continue to provide content for my YouTube channel, Christopher’s Confessions and my blog, Christopher’s Chronicles, while operating my newly licensed business, DVMVGED GOODZ by DC LLC.”

“All-in-all I’m happy to still be alive.” Corry, who came out as gay early in life, often suffered bullying and physical and verbal abuse in his younger years. “Thankfully, at Rutgers-Newark, I’m free to embrace my identity.”
