Rutgers University–Newark was named an Institution of the Year by the EDU Ledger, which launched its inaugural IMPACT Awards to recognize colleges and universities that have made a measurable difference in higher education.

The honor names schools that demonstrate institutional transformation through degree production, student success, research growth, access and social mobility. Rutgers-Newark appeared second on a list of six institutions nationwide. It was the only school in New Jersey and the Northeast to receive the recognition. Find the full list here.

"What makes this recognition especially meaningful is that it reflects the results we see across every part of our mission,’’ said Chancellor Tonya Smith-Jackson. “Rutgers-Newark is proving that academic excellence, groundbreaking research, and student success go hand in hand.’’

“Our students come from every background, including many who are the first in their families to attend college or who face financial barriers, and they are graduating, thriving, and creating impact in their communities,’’ she added. “We take great pride in being an institution that measures success through data, evidence, and outcomes, and this recognition affirms the transformative work happening across our university every day.''

In addition to being named an IMPACT institution, Rutgers-Newark was ranked #6 in the nation for Social Mobility by U.S. News & World Report.

Last fall, the Carnegie Foundation and the American Council on Education designated Rutgers-Newark in the inaugural cohort of Opportunity Colleges and Universities, which recognizes schools that excel at helping economically disadvantaged students find careers that pay competitive salaries. Rutgers-Newark was among the 14% of 3033 institutions selected.

It also achieved a Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, which recognizes institutions that excel at integrating community engagement across teaching, research, and service.
