Come to Rutgers University in Newark to ‘Paint the City Scarlet’ During Homecoming 2009, Sept. 23-26

Editors:  FallFest and the Alumni Basketball  game will offer outstanding photo opportunities as well as opportunities to interview alumni, students, faculty and staff.

 

(NEWARK, SEPT. 14, 2009) — Alumni of Rutgers University, Newark, will join current students, faculty and staff to “paint the city scarlet” this month during the campus’s fifth annual homecoming, a four-day public celebration of community spirit and school pride from Sept. 23-26.

Festivities, which are open to the public, include a Family Fall Fest outdoor fair, Rutgers Spirit Day, the “Mr. and Ms. Rutgers” pageant a . Homecoming 2009 at Rutgers in Newark offers a variety of memory-making opportunities and celebrations for the entire community. All events are open to the public, and most are free, unless otherwise indicated.

  • Sept.  23, 6 p.m., Book-signing with Brad R. Tuttle, author of How Newark Became Newark: The Rise, Fall and Rebirth of an American City
  • Sept.  23, 7 p.m., Meet the Greeks, Essex Room, Paul Robeson Campus Center, 350 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
  • Sept.  24, 6:30 p.m., welcome Home Alumni Mixer at MiSaVi, 62 Van Buren St., Newark, $20 per person
  • Sept.  24, 7:30 p.m., Mr. & Ms. Rutgers Newark, Essex Room, Paul Robeson Campus Center, 350 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
  • Sept. 25, 9 p.m., Homecoming Concert, Essex Room, Paul Robeson Campus Center, 350 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (fee TBA)
  • Sept. 26, 10 a.m., Walking Tour of Historical Newark with Dr. Thomas McCabe, leaves from the Alumni tent at Bradley Hall Parking Lot (Warren St. at Martin Luther King  Jr. Blvd.) ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED)
  • Sept.  26, 11 a.m. – Family Fall Fest, Bradley Hall Parking Lot, corner of Warren Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard.  Fee for optional BBQ, but no charge for admission to Family Fall Fest games and activities.
  • Sept.  26, 2:30 p.m. – Alumni Basketball Game, Golden Dome Athletic Center, 42 Warren St.
  • Sept.  26, 3:30 p.m., Homecoming Social, McGovern’s Pub, 58 New St.
  • Sept.  26, 7 p.m., Homecoming Soccer Game, Alumni Field

Rutgers-Newark can be reached by New Jersey Transit buses and trains, the PATH train and Amtrak from New York City, and by the Newark Light Rail, Washington Street Station or Broad Street Station.  By car, Rutgers-Newark can be reached by the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike, Routes 95, 21, 78, and 280, and the Lincoln and Holland tunnels. Metered parking is available on University Avenue.
