What:
The School of Criminal Justice at Rutgers University—Newark will host a talk with Dr. Alice Goffman about her latest book, On the Run: Fugitive Life in an American City (University of Chicago Press, 2014). On the Run documents an immersive study of police practices in a low-income African-American neighborhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and their impact on the everyday lives of its residents. While living among and closely tracking a group of young African-American men for six years, Goffman observes and chronicles in On the Run a new system of surveillance and control that ultimately fosters a climate of fear and suspicion within the community and among nuclear and extended family members as well as law enforcement authorities.

Who:
Alice Goffman is assistant professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison where she teaches courses in ethnography and urban sociology. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her doctoral degree from Princeton University. Goffman is the daughter of renowned sociologist Erving Goffman (1922-82).
