Please join a conversation with authors Haruko Wakabayashi and Fernanda Perrone, who will be speaking about their new book, Rutgers Meets Japan: A Trans-Pacific Network of the Late Nineteenth Century (Rutgers University Press, 2026). Rutgers was at the center of a vast transnational network of leading reformers, students, teachers, and missionaries in the late nineteenth century. Through contributions from scholars and archivists in the U.S., Canada, and Japan, Rutgers Meets Japan traces the lives of key figures in the exchange of culture and knowledge during the first decades after Japan’s opening to the West and reveals the role and impact of the network in Japan’s modernization and in the early U.S.-Japan relations. Janet Walker will moderate the discussion.
