Rutgers University-Newark Debate Team Achieves Tournament Victory in Final Weeks of the Season
Cornell Policy Debate Tournament at Cornell University (February 10-12)
Andres Moncult and Jaye Ross Win Championship!
- Moncult and Ross competed as the tournament’s top seed (ranked #1) and finished undefeated (6-0). The pair defeated teams including New York University, Cornell University, Binghamton University, and the University of Rochester
- Ross was awarded third place speaker
- Moncult was awarded fourth place speaker
Three Novice Teams Represent RU-N in Their Tournament Debut
- Mohamed Abdelghany and Humza Yousuf ended preliminary rounds with a 3-2 record, made it to the octo-final debate, and ranked within the top 12 teams
- Abdelghany received the ninth place speaker award out of almost 60 speakers.
- Mariah Matthews and Carlo Muratli finished 2-3
- Cara Joy Skelley and Erikka Chowdhury finished 1-4
Debate Pair Competes in Junior Varsity Division for the First Time
- Romina Gimenez and Mike Kelley finished 2-4
District 7 National Debate Tournament Qualifier at Mary Washington University (February 18-19)
Debate Pair Makes RU-N History With Win at District Qualifier
- Chaz Wyche and Luis Carrera made RU-N Debate Team history as the first partnership to receive an invitation to the National Debate Tournament through the district qualifying process instead of the at-large qualifying process.
- Carrera received the second place speaker award out of more than 40 speakers
- Wyche and Carrerra ranked fourth in the tournament
- Moncult and Ross finished 3-5
Debate Team To Compete in Three Post-season National Championship Tournaments
- March 3-6, the team will compete in the JV and Novice Nationals at the University of West Virginia
- March 16-21, the team will compete in the Cross Examination Debate Association Tournament at Johnson County Community College
- March 23-28, the team will compete in the National Debate Tournament
