Rutgers in Newark Will Offer Master of Business & Science Degree, Tech Management Certificate
(NEWARK, N.J., Feb. 17, 2010) –- The Rutgers Board of Governors today approved a Master of Business and Science (MBS) degree for the Newark campus. The new degree program will allow working adults and full-time students to pursue coursework in science, engineering and management while developing workplace skills highly valued by employers.

The masters program had already been approved in December 2009 on the New Brunswick and Camden campuses. Classes on the Newark campus will begin in fall 2010, according to Professor Deborah Silver, universitywide director of the MBS program.
“This new MBS program represents a timely opportunity for professionals to significantly advance their credentials to position themselves competitively in what is currently a challenging job market,” notes Philip Yeagle, dean, Faculty of Arts And Sciences-Newark.
The Newark MBS will offer students the option of undertaking a science concentration in urban environmental analysis and management. Other concentrations are also available in New Brunswick and Camden, and many more are being developed on all three campuses, including biotechnology, chemistry and personal-care chemistry, biomedical engineering, food science, agriculture, industrial mathematics, information technology and actuarial sciences. The MBS is Rutgers’ response to demand for programs that develop scientific professionals with the capabilities needed to succeed in a global economy. These new professionals need up-to-date knowledge in their specialties as well as multidisciplinary entrepreneurial skills.
Both Dean Yeagle and Michael R. Cooper, Ph.D., Dean and Professor of Rutgers Business School—Newark and New Brunswick, cite the distinctly Rutgers advantages for potential MBS students. “With excellent location and superb faculty, registrants will find their needs met in a professional manner at Rutgers University in Newark, “says Yeagle. “With more than 270 Rutgers University degree programs to partner with, Rutgers Business School is uniquely capable of delivering cutting-edge, multidisciplinary curricula that combine the mix of business, science and technology required by today’s leading corporations,” notes Cooper. “The Master of Business and Science fully leverages these capabilities,” he adds.
This new degree is part of a growing national trend in Professional Science Master’s programs, and it is one of the first to create a unified state-wide degree.
On all three campuses, the business curriculum includes courses in finance and accounting, strategic marketing, communication and leadership, project management, management of science and technology and ethics. In the capstone course, student teams are given a real technology from a Rutgers lab, or one of its academic or industry partners, and asked to develop a plan to commercialize the technology. The business courses are also available as a stand-alone “Certificate in Science and Technology Management” for scientists with advanced degrees.
