Inequities In Education, Health, Economic Development Among Topics At June 17-19 Conference
WHO: the School of Public Affairs and Administration (SPAA) at Rutgers University, Newark; the Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University; the Association for Research in the Nonprofit and Voluntary Arena; the National Academy of Public Administration; the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration; and the Drum Major Institute for Public Policy.
WHAT: SPAA is hosting The National Academy of Public Administration’s 2009 Social
Equity and Leadership Conference (SELC), “Social Equity and Regional Disparities.” The conference will examine disparities in education, health care, economic development and immigration. Speakers represent organizations including The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The Council on Foundations and The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, with a special lecture by H. George Frederickson, University of Kansas Institute for Policy and Social Research. On Friday, several Newark-area organizations will be honored for actively addressing inequities in the region: New Jersey Seeds, The Boys and Girls Club of Newark, The New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, YouthBuild-Newark, and the Jewish Renaissance Foundation. In addition, the L. Douglas Wilder Award for Scholarship in Social Equity and Public Policy will be awarded to a member of the public administration community for work in advancing the field of social equity.

BACKGROUND: The annual SELC conference promotes discussion among researchers and practitioners on strategies for reducing disparities in the fields of health, education, community development and business opportunities, and for promoting general community well being.
