Don’t Just Read The Books, Meet Their Authors, and Discuss Their Work With Them at Rutgers-Newark

Rutgers Writers At Newark Reading Group Brings Together Students And Non-Students To Explore Contemporary Literature With The Authors

Ever dream of talking to your favorite writers about their books, or hearing them read their works? Come fall 2012 that will be a reality for fans of several nationally renowned authors taking part in the “Writers at Newark Reading Group.” Ten openings are available for members of the general public to participate, along with Rutgers graduate students, in a program of readings by authors, along with discussions of their works.

Although the reading group is offered through the Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program at Rutgers University, Newark, group members do not need to register in the MFA program, or even be a student to participate.  Adults of all ages and teens attending with an adult are welcome. They simply must register by Aug. 30, agree to attend the four Writers @ Newark readings of the Fall schedule, read and discuss the books used in the course, and attend the five meetings of the group. The Fall Series, which begins Sept. 11 and ends Dec. 11, includes award-wining poets Rigoberto Gonzalez, Aracelis Girmay, Rowan Ricardo Phillips, and Eduardo  C. Corral, first Latino winner of the Yale Younger Poet Prize; fiction writers include Justin Torres, John Keene, Tayari Jones, and Nick Flynn, author of a memoir that is the basis for “Being Flynn,” the recent film featuring Robert DeNiro and Paul Dano.

All books will be loaned through the MFA Program in Creative Writing, which is co-sponsoring the reading group. The discussions and readings will take place at Rutgers’ Paul Robeson Campus Center, in either Room 227 or the Paul Robeson Galleries, at 360 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Participants must complete a registration form, which can be downloaded at http://www.mfa.newark.rutgers.edu/reading%20group.htm and must be emailed or faxed by August 30th (fax: 973-353-1450). For additional information on the reading group, call 973-353-1107 or email RNMFA@newark.rutgers.edu.
