Our Mission

The mission of the Rutgers-Newark Department of Athletics and Recreation is to provide University constituencies, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community at-large with a diverse range of programs and activities to enhance the overall quality of life and participation in the Rutgers Experience. Rutgers-Newark Athletics meets the varied interests and needs of its athletes on intercollegiate, competitive and recreational levels. 

Meet Meghan Haughey, Director of Athletics and Recreation

Megan Haughey


Megan Haughey brings a student-centered approach and a record of competitive and organizational success to Rutgers University–Newark Athletics and Recreation. A Rutgers alumna and former Division I student-athlete, Haughey joined Rutgers–Newark after 14 years at Stevens Institute of Technology, where she served as deputy director of athletics and senior woman administrator while becoming the winningest women’s basketball coach in program history.

Throughout her career, Haughey has focused on creating environments where student-athletes can excel academically, athletically, and personally. Her experience spans strategic planning, recruitment and retention, NCAA compliance, leadership development, and building an engaged campus athletics culture.

At Rutgers–Newark, Haughey is leading the Scarlet Raiders into their next chapter with a focus on student-athlete success, competitive excellence, and stronger connections among athletics, the university, and the greater Newark community.
