Youth = Good Health? Not Necessarily, but Rutgers University- Newark Is Working On That

Think of someone who is overweight, has high blood pressure, and is stressed out, and the odds are that you are not thinking of a college student. But increasingly, today’s college students suffer from those health risks.

For more than a decade, Rutgers University- Newark has worked to change that, sponsoring an interactive and informational fall health fair to demonstrate fun, tasty and healthful life choices to students, faculty and staff.

WHAT:  The 12th annual campuswide RU Healthy Fair on Oct. 8 aims to promote fitness by educating students and employees about life choices that promote good health.  Games will test players’ knowledge of health facts, and activities such as a dance class will get hearts pumping and muscles moving. Also on tap: health screenings, nutritious snacks, giveaways and informational resources. Open to RU students, employees with IDs.

WHEN:  Wed., Oct. 8, noon – 3:30 p.m.

WHERE: Norman Samuels Plaza (entrance from University Avenue, between 175 University Ave. and 195 University Ave.  RAIN LOCATION: Golden Dome Athletic Center, Warren Street and University Avenue, Newark.

WHY:  Many college students eat too many snacks and junk food, get too little sleep and exercise, and experience lot of stress; their family health history also might make them more susceptible to some risks.  But RU Healthy alerts students to health dangers through free screenings, fun activities and healthy snacks.

WHO:  Activities, prizes and exhibits will be offered by various RU-N departments and service providers, including the Health Center and Pharmacy, Athletics and Recreation, Paul Robeson Campus Center, Housing and Residence Life, Public Safety, Rutgers Dining, the Student Health Advocates, and UNITY Theater, as well as community and government agencies, providing vital information about available health resources.
