Message from Chancellor Nancy Cantor Regarding Student Petition

Dear Rutgers University – Newark community members,

As we survey the fraught political landscape nationally and take stock of what our nation’s promise as a democracy means for us as a university community committed to assuring that we remain a place not just open to, but inclusive and fully nurturing of, people of all backgrounds, I write to thank our students for their wisdom and courage in raising issues of critical importance to us all.

As we prepare to support them in their public demonstration of concern, I write with the following reaffirmation of the university’s commitment to remaining a safe space for all to learn.

  • The University will adhere to all state and federal privacy laws. We will protect student privacy and will not share private student information unless required by law or a court order. We expect all persons associated with the University to protect student privacy and confidentiality, as well.

  • Rutgers police do not inquire into nor record the immigration status of students or other persons unless a serious crime has been committed.

  • US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) policy characterizes colleges and universities as “sensitive locations,” places where, in the normal course, enforcement actions should not occur unless extraordinary circumstances exist.

  • Rutgers University does not use E-verify for any purposes other than to comply with longstanding federal law regarding employment eligibility.

  • Immigration status is not a factor in student housing decisions.

We are a university community that treasures the legacy of collaboration among students, faculty, and staff in studying and taking action on issues of importance to the university and to our greater community. Indeed, this spirit of collaboration is embedded in our strategic plan, which we will continue to implement vigorously to assure that our university remains a place of access and opportunity for students of all backgrounds. We will continue to stand firmly by these principles and this ethos.

Cordially,

Nancy Cantor
Chancellor
