Message from Chancellor Cantor: Changes to Plans for January 2022

Dear Rutgers University – Newark community members,

As we start a new year, I reiterate the message of hope I sent recently for the holidays and new year, adding to that my gratitude for every ounce of resilience you continue to show in response to the ongoing challenges of the pandemic.

As Executive Vice President Calcado explained earlier today, we are pivoting in our plans for the beginning of Spring Semester 2022 in response to the COVID-19 omicron variant surge. He summarized new requirements regarding vaccine boosters for students and employees, as well as important changes to instructional and operational protocols that extend to the end of January, detailed in the updated Guide to Returning to Rutgers. I urge all members of the Rutgers-Newark community to read that document. Some of the key takeaways are:

  • Class instruction will occur remotely until Jan 31st, with deans having discretion to determine possible exceptions in cases where a class simply cannot be conducted remotely.
  • Supervisors should, where possible, encourage their staff to telecommute through January 30th.
  • Masking protocols for indoor spaces remain in place and daily self-screening using the My Campus Pass is still required for all Rutgers-Newark community members who will be on campus.
  • All students and employees must be vaccinated and have a booster shot (as soon as eligible) except those with exemptions for medical or religious reasons. Details and deadlines may be found on the Rutgers vaccination website.
  • Research labs and clinics remain open.
  • Except for RBHS, international students, and year-round students, residence halls will re-open to students over the weekend of January 29 and 30, 2022. Detailed information from the Office of Housing and Residence Life for resident students can be found here under the "Living On Campus" tab and will be shared with students via email.
  • Athletic events require proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 PCR test within 72 hours; other in-person events on campus will resume Jan 31st; event hosts will need to check vaccination and/or negative COVID-19 test status.
  • Boosters/vaccinations will be available on campus. The Rutgers-Newark vaccination site will re-open on Monday, January 10, 2022. It is now located at Ackerson Hall, 180 University Avenue, Room 101. Rutgers-Newark employees and students may register for a vaccination appointment here: https://rtr.ipo.rutgers.edu/vaccines/.
  • Any employee whose presence on campus is required may access free weekly testing at the university through January 31, 2022. Information about accessing employee COVID-19 tests is available here: https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/on-campus-testing/. Employees who are telecommuting can receive free at-home testing through the State of New Jersey.

Please review the additional information provided below addressing effects of these changes to protocol that are specific to Rutgers-Newark.

As we anticipate the start of the new semester, we look forward eagerly to being able to welcome our full community back to campus in the weeks to come. Meanwhile, stay safe and healthy!

Cordially,

Nancy Cantor

Chancellor
