Join Elisabeth M. Eittreim for a conversation about her book, Teaching Empire: Native Americans, Filipinos, and U.S. Imperial Education, 1879-1918.
Teaching Empire reveals the challenges that American teachers faced as they worked to translate US imperial policy into practice around the turn of the twentieth century. Entangled in US ambitions, racist norms, and gendered assumptions, this comparative study of teachers’ work among Native Americans and Filipinos offers insight into the personal, institutional, and cultural implications of education deployed in the service of US expansion—with consequences that reach well beyond the imperial classrooms of the time.
