Racial Healing Circle New Practitioner Workshop
111 Washington Street - Room 203
Newark NJ 07102
The Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT) Center at Rutgers University - Newark launched February 2018 is one of 10 national comprehensive community based initiatives developed by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) and funded by W.K. Kellogg, Newman's Own, and Papa Johns Foundations to speak truth about the history of systemic racism, but to focus more on healing and transformation of all communities.
The TRHT Center at Rutgers University - Newark pursues community engagement and democratic collaboration focused on changing the dominant narrative/perception of Newark by connecting our city-wide partner-network through initiatives that promote equity, access, and positive narratives about the city of Newark and its people.
One of the key tenets of any TRHT Center is to host racial healing circles. A Racial Healing Circle is a safe and respectful experience where a diverse group of participants share stories in pairs using tailored prompts and questions that elicit stories of our shared humanity. It is an opportunity to share your truth, listen deeply, and engage the heart to experience our shared humanity and dispel the myth of a hierarchy of human values based on differences.
Racial Healing Circles are NOT discussions/dialogues about race, racism, racial equity work, anti-bias, anti-discrimination, cultural education or cultural competency.
Beginning September 2019, Racial Healing Circles will be held monthly at Rutgers University - Newark and in all of the Newark Public Library branch locations throughout the Cty of Newark. We are seeking individuals interested in serving as facilitators for 90-minute racial healing circles to promote positive narratives in the Newark and greater Newark area.
You will only need to attend one 3-hour session. There are 5 individuals trained as Racial Healing Circle Practitioners for the TRHT Center @ RU-N who will assist in the upcoming circles for the fall.
The workshops will be held in the Center for Urban & Public Service Building (SPAA) 111 Washington Street - Room 203, Newark, NJ 07102.
