Rutgers-Newark Alumni Establish Frank and Marilyn Askin Endowed Fund for Clinical Legal Education

Given the complexities of today’s global society, contemporary law students require more than written materials to become well-trained attorneys. They need a comprehensive education that includes practice-oriented, hands-on, skills-training opportunities. Thanks to the generosity of Rutgers-Newark alumni, Marilyn and Frank Askin, Rutgers School of Law—Newark can continue its tradition of providing invaluable experiential learning to students through clinical legal training.

In the spring of 2010, Frank Askin (NLAW ’66) and Marilyn Askin (NLAW ’70) gave Rutgers School of Law–Newark a gift of more than $115,000 to create an endowment for promoting the law school’s pioneering clinical program. The endowment helps fund conferences, the publication of materials on the work of the clinics, the establishment of clinical fellowships, and related events and programs intended to advance the cause of clinical legal education at the law school.

Appointed to the faculty upon graduating from Rutgers School of Law–Newark in 1966, Frank Askin is the founding director of the Rutgers Constitutional Litigation Clinic, which was established in 1970 and is now one of seven clinics at the law school. Frank’s wife, Marilyn Askin, is the chief legislative advocate for AARP-NJ and an adjunct professor at Rutgers School of Law—Newark where she teaches seminars in elder law and social welfare legislation.
