Public security, victimization, and theory

University Professor
Ph.D. (1975) University of Toronto

Dr. Leslie W. Kennedy is currently University Professor at Rutgers University having served as Dean of the Rutgers School of Criminal Justice from 1998 to 2007. He received his BA from McGill University, his MA from the University of Western Ontario, and his PhD from the University of Toronto. Dr. Kennedy has published extensively in the areas of fear of crime, victimology, and violence. Among his published works, he is the co-author with Vince Sacco of The Criminal Event, appearing in its 4th edition this year. In this book he advocates a holistic approach to the study of crime in social context. In addition, he has published extensively on spatial and temporal analysis of crime patterns.

Dr. Kennedy's current research in public security builds upon his previous research in event analysis and understanding the social contexts in which risks and dangers in society are identified and deterred. He has recently published (with Cynthia Lum and Alison Sherley) an extensive review of counter-terrorism studies in the Journal of Experimental Criminology. He is the author, with Erin E. Gibbs Van Brunschot, of Risk Balance and Security, a book that examines how risk is assessed by agencies faced with major hazards including crime, terrorism, environmental disaster and disease. He is extending this work to examine risk governance, particularly in the context of the globalization of these hazards.

Dr. Kennedy is currently the Director of the Rutgers Center for the Study of Public Security. RCSPS' primary focus is to conduct original analytical, objective research on how risk assessment can be applied to the study of security and to inform public policy discussions in this area.
