A Message from the Chancellor

Chancellor Diner, who was just appointed president the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU), is an urban historian who specializes in the study of urban universities. He recently shared his knowledge with CUMU members in an online column, What Is An Urban University?

Welcome to Rutgers-Newark. I'm glad you're taking this opportunity to get to know more about us. As you browse our site, you will discover that Rutgers-Newark is everything you expect it to be - as well as a lot of things you might not expect.

As the northern campus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, we offer what you expect from a top research university: first-class academic programs, faculty who are leading scholars in their fields, and cutting-edge research.

But you might not expect to find a vibrant, green urban campus in a city enjoying its greatest resurgence in decades. Newark is one of our greatest assets as an institution of higher learning. It is home to major cultural institutions, to Fortune 100 companies, to top law firms, to medical facilities, to government agencies and courts, to five institutions of higher learning with a combined enrollment of over 30,000 students, and to renowned science research centers. Our urban location offers an abundance of experiential learning opportunities for students outside the classroom, internships and volunteer activities. Our students, faculty and staff collaborate with a wide range of community and social organizations. They conduct research on urban issues, work closely with urban school systems, manage health clinics, foster public understanding of American diversity, train state police officers and produce skilled managers for the pharmaceutical industry.

Our friendly, easy-to-walk campus offers student-teacher ratios of 14:1, and both undergraduate and graduate students are taught by first-rate faculty, of whom 99 percent hold advanced degrees. This translates into unparalleled opportunities to develop nurturing relationships with faculty mentors, highly personalized classroom interaction, and numerous opportunities to do hands-on research alongside scholars who are some of the best in their fields.

Step foot on this campus, and you experience the world. As the nation's most diverse national university campus -- so ranked by U.S. News and World Report since 1997 -- Rutgers-Newark educates students from more than 70 nations, creating a stimulating learning environment. The ease of interaction among students of different origins on this campus brings out the best in our national culture, and is a great source of pride to us.

Learn more about us; I think we'll exceed your expectations.
