Rutgers University-Newark Will Host A Feb. 2 Conversation On Student Debt With Cory Booker

PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT HAS BEEN MOVED TO UNIVERSITY SQUARE, 155 UNIVERSITY AVE.

Rutgers University-Newark is hosting a conversation about student debt with U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, the RU-N debate team  and RU-N students on Feb. 2, from noon – 1 p.m., in University Square Rsidene Hall, 155 University Ave. The conversation will center on the issue, “The Merits of Student Debt Legislation: What is the Role of the Federal Government?”

Sen. Booker is co-sponsoring the FAST Act, a bill to simplify the process of applying for and receiving federal financial aid to attend college, allow year-round use of Pell Grants, discourage over-borrowing and simplify repayments. In the last Congress, Sen. Booker co-sponsored the Bank on Students Emergency Loan Refinancing Act, which would allow eligible students to refinance their federal loans.

Following a student-led debate, the senator will discuss his legislation, FAST Act and answer questions from the audience.

The free program is open to students, faculty and staff, as well as the public. It will be in the second-floor Essex Room of the Paul Robeson Campus Center.

The event is co-sponsored by the Office of the Chancellor, School of Public Affairs and Administration, Academic Foundations Center, Housing, Admissions, Rutgers Business School, School of Law, School of Criminal Justice, Faculty of Arts and Sciences Newark, Office of University and Community Partnerships, the Office of Communications, and the Paul Robeson Campus Center.
