Mayor Cory Booker Jumpstarts the Day at the School of Public Affairs and Administration

The School of Public Affairs and Administration (SPAA) at Rutgers University in Newark will celebrate its first annual “Public Service Day” on Thursday, October 7. The SPAA community – students, faculty and staff – will devote the entire day exploring the roles of public servants within the Newark community. The day will begin with inspiring words from Mayor Cory Booker. Immediately thereafter participants will heed the call of duty and blanket the city to engage in various volunteer projects of interest.

8:30 am – Continental breakfast

9:30 am – Mayor Cory Booker launches Comprehensive Volunteer Service Plan

10:30 am – Off-campus civic engagement begins (see attached list)

11 am – Community organization fair begins

12 pm – On-campus service project begins (see attached list)

3:30 pm – Closing remarks, raffle and reflections

Goodwill Rescue Mission (assist Development and Finance departments prepare for upcoming busy season with clerical help, data entry, and file maintenance), 79 University Avenue, 10:30 am-3 pm

In the Hands of a Woman Ministries (conduct inventory of donations), 79 University Avenue, 10:30 am-3 pm

NJPIRG (students will attend weatherization workshops on Oct. 7, 2010 to prepare for community visits on October 16, 2010), Paul Robeson Center, 11 am-3 pm

Rutgers Against Hunger (students will assemble boxes, package donations and prepare for delivery to The Apostle House), Paul Robeson Center–Essex Room, 10-12 and 9 am-3 pm

Rutgers T.E.E.M Gateway AmeriCorps (sign-up to volunteer at non-profit agencies to teach class on a subject or talent they know a lot about), 10:30 am-3 pm

Samuel L. Berliner School of Personal Growth and Development (undergraduate students will assist various students during Language Arts Literacy period. The volunteers will read along with the students in small groups in order to improve their reading skills, complete assignments, and activities), 70 Montgomery Street, 8:35-9:35 am and 9:35-10:35 am
