Chancellor Steven J. Diner has announced the appointment of Glenn Shafer, PhD, as interim dean of Rutgers Business School – Newark and New Brunswick (RBS), effective immediately. Shafer replaces Michael Cooper, who served as RBS dean for three and a half years.

“President McCormick and I are deeply grateful for Glenn’s willingness to assume the leadership of RBS during this interim period,” noted Chancellor Diner.

A renowned scholar, a Board of Governors Professor, and the longstanding director of the business doctoral program, Shafer joined the Rutgers faculty in 1992. During his tenure, he has taught a variety of courses related to his research interests in accounting, finance, probability, and information systems. He currently teaches stochastic processes and game theory in the Rutgers Business School’s doctoral program.

His many contributions to the university include service on the university-wide Promotion Review Committee (2001-06).  In 1996, he led a major revision of the Rutgers Business School’s MBA curriculum.  As director of the Rutgers Business School’s doctoral program (1997-2000 and 2003-present), he has been instrumental in reorganizing the doctoral curriculum.

A prolific writer, Shafer’s publications include numerous articles and six books. He currently serves on the advisory boards of the International Journal of Approximate Reasoning and the International Journal of Intelligent Systems as well as the editorial boards of Statistical Science and the Electronic Journal for History of Probability and Statistics.

In 2009, Shafer received an honorary doctorate in economics from the University of Economics, Prague, in honor of his work in developing new approaches to the use of probability in finance, statistics, and other fields. Among his many other honors he was awarded the Gorenstein Award for Research and Service at Rutgers University (2004) and was a Fulbright Fellow in Berlin, Germany (2001).

Prior to his post at Rutgers, Shafer held professorships at the University of Kansas (1976-92) and his alma mater, Princeton University (1973-76), where he received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1968 and his doctoral degree in statistics in 1973.  A native of Kansas and resident of Newark, New Jersey, Shafer and his wife, Nell Irvin Painter, have two sons and one grandson.
