IJS Research Roundtable: West German Jazz Diplomacy by Mario Dunkel.
West German Jazz Diplomacy by Mario Dunkel: German jazz scholar Mario Dunkel illuminates the multi-faceted history of West German jazz diplomacy. Starting in the early 1960s, the West German Goethe-Institut sent many major German jazz musicians abroad, including Albert Mangelsdorff, Heinz Sauer, Klaus Doldinger, and Kurt Edelhagen, among others. This roundtable explores the political, cultural, medial, and musical repercussions of these musicians’ extensive tours to Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and America.
