Public higher education in NJ faces critical challenges. Among the key issues are affordability, accessibility, and workforce development while striving for institutional excellence and effective statewide governance. NJ’s four-year public colleges and universities are some of the most productive in the country and have some of the highest retention rates and graduation rates in the country – and enrollment are at record levels. The restructuring of the public research sector has positioned Rutgers University to compete nationally with other flagship institutions, and it has placed Rowan University in a more prominent position to conduct research and medical education.
