Rutgers-Newark students, faculty and staff have a history of engagement with the campus's home city that is as old as the campus. In 2007, for the first time, the university formally recognized that town/gown commitment when Provost Steven Diner presented the inaugural annual Provost's Awards for Community Engagement at ceremonies in December.
