Speaker Bios
Alfred Koeppe
Newark College of Arts and Sciences
University College

Rutgers University is pleased to welcome as speaker for the Newark College of Arts and Sciences and University College, Alfred C. Koeppe, president and chief executive officer of the Newark Alliance and member of the Rutgers Hall of Distinguished Alumni.

Koeppe's journey to the "C-suite" began upon his graduating from Rutgers University in Newark in 1969 with a bachelor of arts degree and joining the operations department of New Jersey Bell. While working at New Jersey Bell, Koeppe attended Seton Hall University School of Law, and after earning his juris doctor, served as a trial attorney for the New Jersey Department of the Public Defender.

Koeppe eventually returned to the corporate world as an attorney in the law department of AT&T where he represented AT&T in the landmark antitrust/divestiture case that spawned the "Baby Bells." After serving in a series of senior executive positions, Koeppe was elected president and chief executive officer of Bell Atlantic-New Jersey in 1992. In 1995 he joined PSE&G and in 2000 became its president and chief operating officer. He retired from PSE&G in 2003, and to date, is the only person to have served as the top executive of New Jersey’s two largest utilities.

In 1999 Koeppe helped found the Newark Alliance, a not-for-profit organization that unites some of New Jersey's largest corporations with Newark's higher education community, health-care providers and civic and non-profit organizations to improve the city's economic and educational future. The Newark Alliance epitomizes Koeppe's commitment to making an impactful difference in his community as evidenced by his chairmanships of the New Jersey Higher Education Commission, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, and the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce.

Known for his philanthropy, Koeppe is a member of the leadership committee for the Rutgers Campaign and chaired the $25 million capital campaign for the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital in New Brunswick. Koeppe was one of five alumni of Rutgers University in Newark to co-chair the Newark campus' Centennial Gala held last June. The net proceeds of the gala exceeded $180,000 and were used to award scholarships to students of Rutgers University in Newark.

Residing in Manasquan, New Jersey, with his wife Ann, Koeppe currently serves on the Board of Directors of New Jersey Resources Corporation, Horizon Blue Cross/Blue Shield of New Jersey, and is a member of the Board of Regents of Seton Hall University. He holds memberships in the New Jersey and American Bar Associations and serves as a trustee for the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice as well as St. Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark.
