Rutgers-Newark Weather Information and Campus Operating Status |
Rutgers-Newark Weather Information and Campus Operating Status

updated Winter 2008/09

Memorandum to Faculty and Staff at the Rutgers-Newark Campus
From: Gene A. Vincenti, Executive Vice Chancellor for Administration

With the winter season rapidly approaching, the possibility of inclement weather increases. I am writing to remind us all of University policy and procedures concerning weather conditions and Weather Emergencies. As a general rule, the University rarely closes its offices because of inclement weather.

As a first step, please review University Regulation 60.3.16 which provides ample detail regarding University operations during inclement weather. This regulation was sent to Deans, Directors, and Department Chairpersons. If you have access to a Rutgers website, you can read a copy of the regulation at http://policies.rutgers.edu. In the unlikely event of a closing, a delayed opening, or class cancellation, we will do our best to provide early notification of any decision. If you are not designated as an "essential services employee", your decision regarding travel in inclement weather is a personal one, and should be based upon your personal circumstances. With the appropriate approval of your supervisor you may wish to take personal leave rather than commute in difficult weather situations.

If we do close University offices on the Newark Campus, please follow these simple instructions. A message will be carried on the Campus's emergency phone line, 973-353-1766, and on the Rutgers-Newark website. By calling this phone number or by accessing our home page, you will be able to receive the most accurate status report of campus conditions. It is strongly suggested that you set your default browser to this home page.

Except in rare circumstances, notice of campus closing and delayed opening will be announced on the Rutgers-Newark website by 6am, and evening class cancellations will be announced by 3pm.

As in prior years, the University's offices may remain open for business even if classes are delayed or cancelled. Class cancellations and delays will also be announced on the Campus's emergency phone line, 973-353-1766, and on the Rutgers-Newark website. Also, we will do our utmost to include up-to-date information about the situations at the Rutgers-New Brunswick/Piscataway Campus, and the campuses of Essex County College, NJIT, and UMDNJ-Newark.

In addition, the following radio and television stations will carry information on School Closings:

WCTC 1450AM New Brunswick
WRSU 88.7 FM New Brunswick
WRNJ 1510AM Hackettstown
WKXW 101.5FM Trenton
WCBS 880AM New York City
WINS 1010AM New York City
News 12 NJ Channel 12 Cablevision systems
WCBS  - TV Channel 2
WNBC  - TV Channel 4

These stations carry simple announcements in their own words. For example, there may be an announcement that Rutgers' Newark Campus is closed. Please keep in mind that this may only refer to class cancellations.

Finally, all academic and administrative units are required to keep an updated telephone chain available for weather and other emergencies. Please check with your supervisor, department or unit head to be sure that your unit's telephone chain will be operational as well. All staff and faculty at Rutgers-Newark should also check that the Rutgers directory has your up-to-date and accurate email address and other contact information. To review your entry, please go to http://www.acs.rutgers.edu/directory.

Please refrain from calling the Rutgers Police regarding possible weather related delays, cancellations, or closures. During inclement weather conditions, it is vitally important that they be able to receive emergency calls. Also, please refrain from calling the radio and television stations. They will not give out information over the telephone anyway, and a large volume of calls can tie up their phone lines at critical times too.

In closing, please be assured that we will use all means available to us to communicate this information as broadly as possible. Weather emergencies can occur at any hour, so please keep a copy of this memo and home phone numbers of your colleagues both at work and at home. Thank you very much.
