You expect a university like Rutgers to say good things about its academic programs, students and faculty, research, and its contributions to making a difference, locally and beyond. But when institutions outside the university publically recognize and honor the quality of those things, well, that's not just bragging or marketing - it's the reality of rankings. Here are what U. Our History
Rutgers University in Newark is one of three campuses of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. We officially came into existence in 1946, when the New Jersey State Legislature voted to make the University of Newark part of Rutgers University. Our roots, however, date back to 1908 when the New Jersey Law School first opened its doors. [more]
Academics
We have seven schools: Newark College of Arts and Sciences/University College - Newark, School of Public Affairs and Administration, College of Nursing, School of Criminal Justice, Graduate School - Newark, Rutgers School of Law - Newark, and Rutgers Business School - Newark and New Brunswick. We offer more than 40 majors and award approximately 60 doctoral degrees, 1,000 graduate degrees, and 1,200 baccalaureate degrees each year. [more]
Faculty
We have more than 500 full-time faculty members, 99 percent of whom hold doctor of philosophy or juris doctor degrees. Our faculty currently includes a Pulitzer Prize recipient and members of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. A number of our faculty members have been awarded the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship and named as Fulbright Fellows.
Research
Our mission is simple - to create new knowledge, provide top-quality education to our students, and share academic and intellectual resources with New Jersey's residents. We accomplish our mission not only through the classroom and through the research initiatives of individual faculty members but also through a variety of centers and institutes where faculty members are involved in cutting edge research.
Diversity
We are well known for the extraordinary racial, ethnic and religious diversity of our student body. U.S. News & World Report "Best Colleges" has consistently ranked us No. 1 in student diversity among national universities since 1997. This diversity provides unparalleled opportunities for teaching and learning. [more]
