Teaching Leadership For Tomorrow’s Business Successes

Who better to teach leadership and ethics, than an author of the key text used in college classrooms across the country to teach about business, society, ethics and leadership? And who better to also serve as research director of the Rutgers Institute for Ethical Leadership than a scholar lauded for her “collaborative skills, her mentorship of doctoral students, and her visibility and leadership in the profession”?

Ann K. Buchholtz develops and teaches courses on ethics for both undergraduate and graduate programs, to fulfill Rutgers Business School’s mission of promoting and strengthening ethical leadership among current and future business leaders. Toward that end, Buchholtz not only teaches students, but consults with leaders in business, government and non-profit organizations, teaching them to navigate through complex business issues and to make decisions that enhance society.

In 2011-2012, it was Buchholtz who spearheaded the effort as RBS participated in the annual survey of MBA Programs integrating social, ethical and environmental stewardship known as  the Global 100 of Beyond Pinstripes, conducted by the Aspen Institute’s Business & Society Program.   “Rutgers Business School has a long rich history of promoting ethical behavior and enabling business to be a positive influence in society - and so we are especially proud not only to be a member of the Global 100 for the first time but also to be ranked at #34 overall in our first year of inclusion. We are ranked #12 in faculty research that incorporates social, environmental, and ethical content,” notes Buchholtz.   The rankings of the 100 schools are based on how well the schools are preparing students for tomorrow's markets by equipping them with the social, environmental, ethical and economic perspectives required for business success in a competitive and fast changing world.  

 Buchholtz received her Ph.D. from the Stern School of Business at New York University.  She is past Division Chair of the Social Issues in Management Division of the Academy of Management. She was a member of the ethics task force that designed a Code of Ethics for the Academy and served as the inaugural chairperson of the Academy’s Ethics Adjudication Committee.  Her work has been published in Business and Society, Business Ethics Quarterly, the Academy of Management Journal, the Academy of Management Review, the Journal of Management, Organization Science, the Journal of Management Studies, Corporate Governance: An International Review, among others. She is co-author, with Archie Carroll, of Business and Society: Ethics and Stakeholder Management, 8th ed. (Cengage) and serves on the editorial boards of Business & Society and Business Ethics Quarterly. Recently, she was elected to the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management.

Buchholtz was awarded the "Trailblazer Advocate of the Year" award for her service learning programs, which taught business students to use their skills to effect positive changes in society. She is the recipient of many other teaching awards including Profound Effect on a Student Leader and various Outstanding Teaching Awards.

 

She has expertise in business ethics, business and society, corporate governance, and corporate social responsibility.
